The Clark County School District in Las
Vegas held its annual Development Day,
providing ongoing learning opportunities for
teachers throughout the district, on Feb. 19.
Educators teaching Health, Physical Educa-
tion, and Adapted Physical Education in
grades K-12 each took part in a 45-minute
Bowler's Ed/In-School Bowling instructional
session.
"Introducing a new activity, like bowling, to
our teachers is very beneficial," said Liz
Verdi-Whitehead, the K-12 Wellness Project
Facilitator for the Clark County School Dis-
trict. "Teachers are always looking for new
ideas to make students more active. Bowling
teaches students various motor skills, physi-
cal fitness, responsibility, and cooperation,
which falls within our physical education
curriculum."
To enhance the lives of others through
bowling, The Bowling Foundation partnered
with the Southern Nevada USBC Association
(SNUSBCA) and the Bowling Centers of
Southern California, donating all six Bowler's
Ed kits to the school district at the end of
their development day.
"Helping out this cause for youth educa-
tion was a top priority," said Chris Holmes of
the Bowling Centers of Southern California.
Bobbi Hoven of the Southern Nevada
USBC added: "Allowing the teachers in the
district to learn a new lesson and be able to
immediately implement it into their curriculum
with the proper Bowler's Ed equipment is a
great opportunity."
The Bowler's Ed program requires individ-
ual coordination, timing, and concentration
yet accommodates a number of participants,
making it ideal for increasing classroom
sizes. The Bowler's Ed program conforms to
all six National Association for Sport and
Physical Education (NASPE) standards,
while offering students of all ages, sizes and
abilities the opportunity to have fun and learn
a lifelong sport.
"With many districts cutting financial re-
sources, The Bowling Foundation finds it
very important to assist teachers by provid-
ing this fun, unique, and fitness-focused
curriculum that develops future bowlers
through health and education," said Nancy
Schenk, president of The Bowling Founda-
tion.
"It is always great to see the community
helping out physical education teachers,"
Verde-Whitehead said. "This equipment will
give teachers the opportunity to teach bowl-
ing in a fun and effective way!"
