Murtishaw And Murtishaw Dominate
MURRIETA - The Murtishaw men are leading
all scratch bowlers in Cal Oaks "BIG LEAGUE"
on Thursday night.
After four weeks, patriarch Jim is averaging
241
with four solid seven hundreds and high of
757.
Son Matt is subbing at a 242 pace, with a
high of 736. By the way, the Murtishaw's are
available for advice and ball drilling at their
FAST LANES PRO SHOPS inside Brunswick
Cal Oaks and Classic Lanes.
In today's world of scoring some would say a
240
average isn't so impressive. I say otherwise
because the lane conditions for this league are
difficult. While CAL OAKS BOWL gives their
bowlers a consistent shot every day, the shot on
Thursday night at 9 PM is challenging. The
lanes are not oiled after the 6 PM league and no
one can guess how the early evening keglers
are going to move the oil around. I call the
condition a "MISHMASH."
A Mishmash condition means these scratch-
ers face a different challenge every
week. Sometimes it is wet-dry, sometimes dry-
dry, other times it is wet. No one ever knows
what to expect. To attest to the difficulty of the
Mishmash, many of the other regular scratch
bowlers are ten or more pins below their book
average.
Some of the other bowlers doing well in the
league are ALLEN FREEMAN, JAMES HAW-
KINS, JASON KIRKISH, SKI SZCZAWINSKI
and DEWAINE WEST.
The high series so far are Allen Freeman's
768,
Joey Mathis' 766 and James Hawkins'
761.
What's up? Or should I ask what's
down? Last season Jim Murtishaw rolled three
800
s in the first four weeks. This year no one
has reached 770! Game highs include JERRY
DeYAGER'S 299 and ALAN MOJADO'S 290.
ANITA MURTISHAW'S 684 leads the ladies
parade with the high game by PAULA VIDAD at
246.
The Citrus Belt Leads The Nation In BVL Dona-
tions
By: Frank Weiler and Therese Lloyd
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - The Bowlers To Vet-
eran's Link (BVL) is Bowling's charity to support
our military veterans who need help. While the
BVL'S primary focus is helping disabled veter-
ans in our Veteran's Hospitals, the charity also
has programs to support our active duty military
overseas. Every year the United States Bowling
Congress (USBC) collects donations from it's
league bowlers to fund this worthy cause.
The Citrus Belt BVL program is chaired by
Vice President ED MOTE. Ed has led our BVL
program for about five years now and each of
those years has seen an increase in our dona-
tions. Mr. Mote is a retired USAF Captain and
as a veteran this work is dear to his heart.
After being second in the nation last year, the
Citrus Belt USBC Association was recently
notified that it is this years top BVL donor in the
nation, with donations totaling more than
$20,000. With the Citrus Belt in the lead, the
state of California was also the top state in the
nation.
Placita Baker Cooks Up A 678
REDLANDS - Empire Bowl's Noonlighter
Senior League has been in action for seven
weeks. During that period Placita Baker has
led the ladies almost every week on her way
to posting a league high 192 average.
Last week Placita rolled a season high
678 (215 - 249 - 214)
series. Three big splits
in game three prevented her from rolling her
first 700
series. To date her high scores are a 279
and a 695.
Mrs. Baker used her Track 919C to record
her big score. She told me it is the best
bowling ball she has ever had. Placita is a
regular at Del
Rosa Lanes, Empire Bowl and Foothill
Lanes, and at tournament play. She and
husband John love to bowl and it's his sup-
port that keeps her going and enthused
about the sport.
This is Placita's best season ever. She
has three 600s in seven weeks of bowling. If
she keeps up her pace, she may eclipse
perennial league leaders MARY ANDRUCZYK
and THERESE LLOYD. I enjoy watching this
lady string strikes as she plies the lanes from the
right corner. She generates a good deal of pin
action by imparting a wicked spin to every strike
shot. More spin than any other woman I've seen
in a while.
Great bowling Mrs. Baker!
Jerry DeYager Lands A "747" On Lane Five
MURRIETA - Jerry DeYager led all Cal Oak's
scratch bowlers last week with a "747" (236-
248-263) "
AIRPLANE SERIES." At least
that's what he called his series. I call it a
good series on the difficult MISHMASH oil
pattern left over from the six PM league at
Cal Oaks Bowl.
Doctor Strangeglove has struck again. I
will write more about the good doctor at a
later date. For now I salute Jerry "Dr.
Strangeglove" DeYager for his good bowling.
