Don Glover Masters Champion

Bakersfield, CA--New was the theme of this year’s 6
th
annual
Don Glover Masters Scratch Tournament that was held this past
weekend, October 6-7, at Regency Bowling Center. The event
had a new location, the guaranteed first place new amount was
increased to $3,000 and this year’s champion, Eddie Van Dani-
ker, and this was new as it was his first time to enter this tourna-
ment.
The tournament this year was dedicated to the memory of PBA
great Tony Reyes whom we lost on September 28 due to injuries
suffered in a car accident. Reyes, who has bowled in the Glover
tournament several times, was also friends with a lot of our local
bowlers as well as Glover tournament bowlers. In his honor, two
lanes remained dark throughout the tournament, sympathy cards
were signed and a donation collected and given to Marvin Hale,
who worked with Tony at Off the Sheet Pro Shop.
Saturday’s two qualifying squads drew a total of 45 entrants
which is up from last year’s event. Dave Wodka, from Hender-
son, NV, was the leader in the ―A‖ qualifying squad with
1324.
Wodka’s first game out was a 257. Bakersfield’s Zack
Newman came in second (1258). The ―B‖ squad’s leader was
Mason Sherman of Woodland Hills with a 1239. The Top 20 from
qualifying squads ―A‖ and ―B‖ then bowled again on Saturday to
cut the field to ten for the semi-finals Sunday morning.
Dave Wodka again led the way for the Top 10 with a
1290.
Wodka, well-known as he has won a National Tour Title
plus (14) Regional Titles and placed either second or third in the
last couple Glover events, is also the District Sales Manager for
Ebonite International. The field was set and the Match Play Semi-
Finals were bowled to determine the Top Five for the Step-Ladder
Finals.
Seeded fifth was Tony Knuth of Oceanside against fourth seed
Mason Sherman of Woodland Hills. This match was close with
both bowlers having a double going into the tenth but Sherman
took the match 193-171. Next up for Sherman to face was third
seed Jess Stayrook of Bakersfield, the only leftie in the Top
5.
Sherman started stringing strikes in the sixth that shut Stay-
rook out of the match 230-196, even though Stayrook ended with
a turkey in the tenth. Sherman progressed on to take on second
seed Eddie Van Daniker of Chatsworth. This was again another
close match but Sherman had a split in the 9
th
which cost him and
he was defeated 189-202 which lead the way for second seed
Van Daniker to bowl top seed Dave Wodka in the final
match. Van Daniker started the game hot with a double while
Wodka, 41, started out steady but threw a split in the fourth frame
and then a missed single pin in the fifth put his game in trou-
ble. Although neither Wodka nor Van Daniker, 26, were stringing
strikes, it was a double for Van Daniker in the eighth and ninth
that sealed the deal. Van Daniker defeated Wodka 203-

ARLINGTON, Texas - United States
Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Anne
Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla., defeated
fellow hall of famer Dana Miller-Mackie of
Albuquerque, N.M., on Tuesday to win the
2012
USBC Senior Queens presented by
Storm.
Duggan, who turned 50 last month,
defeated Miller-Mackie, 199-173, at the
International Training and Research Cen-
ter to claim the title. The event featured a
field of 56 of the top senior women bowl-
ers in the country.
In the title match, Duggan jumped out
to a quick start, striking on five of her first
seven shots and taking more than a 50-
pin lead.
"
It was really fun to win something
again," said Duggan, who won 15 career
titles on the women's professional tour.
"
Obviously I don't put the time into my
bowling that I used to, but to still see that I
can throw it well when I need it, feels
really good."
Duggan, who entered the stepladder
finals as the third seed, had to win three
matches to take the title. In the semifinal,
she defeated Char Hammel of Las Vegas,
210-201,
after knocking off fellow hall of
famer Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs,
Colo., 224-198, in the opening match.
"
I really wasn't thinking about having to
win all those matches," Duggan said.
"
There was no use in getting myself all
worked up, so I just took it one shot at a
time. I made a lot of really good shots and
a lot of bad shots, but fortunately they
didn't cost me."
Duggan took home $2,400 for the title
along with the Senior Queens tiara, trophy
and pendant.
