Jeanne Naccarato Repeats Dominance At Golden Ladies
By Fred Eisenhammer
Las Vegas: It was 2009 again for Jeanne Naccarato in the 27th Golden Ladies Clas-
sic at the Orleans Bowling Center.
Naccarato, of Tacoma, Wash., reprised her dominating performance in the 19th
Golden Ladies tournament by claiming the top prize in this year‟s four-day event.
Naccarato earned the top seed in the stepladder finals and captured her second
Golden Ladies title Thursday morning by scoring a 231-179 victory over fourth-
seeded Sharon Powers in the championship match. Naccarato ended the match with
five consecutive strikes.
Eight years ago, Naccarato also was the top seed in the stepladder finals and took
home the first-place trophy with a 206-175 victory over Robin Romeo of Newhall.
Naccarato is a distinguished bowler who was inducted into the Women‟s Profes-
sional Bowling Hall of Fame in 2002. She set a record for highest sanctioned three-
game series in the 1986 Women‟s Central States tournament. She totaled an 864
with scores of 300, 300 and 264.
Powers opened the championship match with two strikes and led Naccarato by 11
pins. But the game turned when Powers got three straight splits and was unable to
convert any of them.
Powers rolled into the championship match with a 266-219 victory over second-
seeded Lucy Sandelin. All together, Powers won three stepladder matches before
succumbing to Naccarato.
Powers opened with a 237-217 victory over fifth-seeded Laura Lee Daniel. In her
second match, Powers eliminated third-seeded Tish Johnson, 227-216.
Johnson was the top seed in the previous four Golden Ladies stepladder finals, win-
ning the title in 2013.
Naccarato was the second seed in last year's Golden Ladies tournament but lost in
her only stepladder match, 227-182, to eventual champion Michele Carter, who did
not qualify for the stepladder finals this year.
Carter rebounded to win the Golden Ladies Second Chance tournament title with
scores of 207, 266, 236, 216 and 268.
Paula Vidad, of Sun City, Calif., won the 2016 Second Chance tournament – a
matchup of bowlers who did not cash in the main event and stuck around for another
competition. Vidad finished ninth in this year's event.
Vidad won the 2015 Golden Ladies title, becoming the first woman to win the Senior
bowling circuit‟s triple crown. She also had won the United States Bowling Congress
Senior Queens championship in 2011 and back-to-back Senior U.S. Open titles in
2013 and 2014.
The Golden Ladies tournament was open to eligible women aged 50 and above.
More than 100 bowlers took part.
