Lining Yourself Up For Strikes
Do you want more strikes? Of course, everyone wants more strikes! Do
you wonder why you don’t? Well, let me try to help you.
First, where you stand has to be the most important culprit. Ladies, the
size of your hips (width) is first for thought.
I’m sure you all will agree that you have to swing your arm alongside the
body (hips) in a pendulum arc, and the arm must swing in a straight line.
Correct this fault at once by having someone you trust watch you arm
swing. Many ladies push the ball to the right; therefore, the ball goes be-
hind the body. Some push the ball straight ahead from the center of your
body; so, therefore, the ball either hits your knee (hurts, doesn’t it?) once in
a while and you swing the ball to the right of your body in the backswing.
Now goes where the ball goes in the delivery? To the left, across the lanes,
missing your target arrow. You can’t understand why the ball goes Brooklyn
and you say, “Wow, do these lanes hook!” Don’t blame the lanes, blame
yourself. Now read carefully.
Stand in your usual place back from the foul line, feet pointed straight
ahead, slightly separated about two boards, not locked together because
you do not walk that way. Let your bowling arm hang down straight from the
shoulder, fingers pointed to the floor. Your fingers should hang over the dot
on the approach which is in line with the second arrow. Lots of people
stand in the wrong place because their eyes fool them. More about that
later.
If there are seven dots on the approach, then the second dot in from the
side is the board that the second arrow is on. If there are only five dots on
the approach, then the end dot is on the second arrow board. Walk up to
the foul line some time and check it out.
Now your arm is hanging down straight, fingers pointed to the floor.
Move around until your fingers are hanging over the board on the approach
that the second arrow is on. Look at your sliding foot, the inside of it, by
your big toe and see what board it’s on. This is your strike position. Now
walk straight to the line ending on the same board you started on, keeping
your body square to the pins. Hold the ball in line with your hip bone, not in
front and in the middle of your body. Keep your arm swing parallel to the
boards and hit the second arrow.
Follow through up to your face, staying square to the pins. You have just
had a strike—I hope.
