SERVING THE BOWLING INDUSTRY SINCE 1967
California USBC Lends A Hand
By: Mary Lynly
Recreation – an entertainment group who has entertained on behalf of the
Bowlers to Veterans Fund in Veterans hospitals and other venues throughout
the United States for many years suffered a great loss to their organization.
Their truck and trailer with all their musical equipment and costumes for the
current performing chorus were stolen and vandalized. The truck (damaged)
and equipment (mostly gone) and costumes (vandalized and many gone) was
recovered in Texas. There are always setbacks with any organization but to
have all of their sound equipment and custom made costumes worth thou-
sands of dollars stolen and vandalized - was a real blow.
While there is insurance to some extent it still doesn‟t put the troop back in
business in a timely fashion to continue their rigorous schedule of perform-
ances. Equipment to replace, costumes to remake and adjusting to the trauma
of suddenly having your livelihood taken away created a depression among
this wonderful group. Recreation‟s director Jay Mueller is an inspirational per-
son and the entertainment group was spawned from a church oriented pro-
gram many years ago. The fact that they had faith in God is helping them get
through the mishap.
Recreation is special to California and has entertained at our many VA hos-
pitals and bowling association events over the years – always giving a memo-
rable performance. California has led all donors to BVL since recordkeeping
began and once more – California comes through.
The California USBC has donated $5,000 to help Recreation re-group and
get back
on the road
and entertaining our veterans. God bless.
CBW Phone Card
Donation Deadline Nears

December 31

, 2012
marks the deadline for phone card donations. Our
U.S. Military Troops are still out there fighting to preserve our freedom and as
long as that goes on our California Writers Phone Cards for the Troops contin-
ues to provide a prized possession for those men and women who are away
from home and enduring the discomfort and heat in Afghanistan and Iraq.
There is little comfort for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The heat is
unbearable at times and most troops are in heavy flack uniform, helmet, boots
and carrying various gear and a weapon. We wouldn‟t last five minutes carry-
ing that load and we can pick up our iPhones or other tech devices and call
anywhere in the world we wish. Security is such – not so for our troops so the
phone cards are a special connection with their loved ones.
This will be the 9
th
year of CBW providing phone cards for our troops. We
are just short of $50,000 in donations for the purchase of cards and we send
approximately 350 – 125 or 300 minute phone cards allowing our military to
connect with their loved ones. Their families tell us, and they tell us what a
gift” it is to hear their family‟s voices. What better way to honor them than to
provide something that links families to loved ones in the armed services and
away from home?
We are so lucky to live in America and this phone card effort means a lot to
CBW. Donations since inception total $49, 435.44. If we exceed the $8185
from last year we will have provided over 2600 phone cards to our troops and
over $50,000 in donations.
The AT&T International calling cards go to all branches of the service and
are sent to arrive on Valentine‟s Day.
Log on to the CBW website
and click on “Phone
Cards for the Troops Reminder.” Donors are listed – check it out.
Send donations to: Tina Martin, Treasurer, California Bowling Writers, 57
Shields Lane, Novato, CA 94947-3877. Please make checks payable to
CBW.
Arlington, Texas – USBC Hall of Famer Robin
Romeo, Van Nuys, Calif., won the inaugural Senior
Women‟s Triple Crown Shootout, Presented by the
Orleans Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. The event
was held on October 21, at the International Training
and Research Center in Arlington, Texas. The single
game, single elimination match play tournament was
contested during the USBC Senior Queens Tourna-
ment.
Only a select group of senior women qualified to
compete in the Shootout, based on cumulative qualify-
ing scores from bowlers who participated in the “Big
Three” women‟s senior events in 2012; the National
Golden Ladies Classic, presented by the Orleans; the
BPAA Women‟s Senior U.S. Open and the USBC
Senior Queens.
As top qualifier, Romeo was seeded into the semi-
finals in match play with a total pinfall of 10586 with
scores of 3222 (Sr. Queens, 15 games), 3826 (Sr. US
Women‟s Open, 18 games) and 3538 (National
Golden Ladies, 15 games). Romeo defeated Dana
Miller-Mackie, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 249-204 in
her first match and Lucy Sandelin, Tampa, Fla., 243-
208
in the final match.
Mike Kaufman, Director of Bowling Operations for
Coast Casinos, suggested a Triple Crown for senior
women‟s bowling during a 2011 conversation with
Brian Lewis, USBC Managing Director of Tourna-
ments. Lewis was interested in discovering what
made the National Golden Ladies Tournament so
successful and how that success could be turned into
more entries for the Sr. Queens and Sr. US Open.
Boyd Gaming [parent company to The Orleans] has
been a longtime supporter of women‟s bowling going
back to 1984 with the sponsorship of the Sam‟s Town
Invitational which was the start of our involvement with
the Professional Women‟s Bowling Association
(
PWBA). That relationship grew with the eventual
umbrella sponsorship of the Ladies Professional Bowl-
ers Tour (LPBT) in the 90‟s. It‟s only fitting that we are
able to continue that support through our commitment
to the National Golden Ladies Classic at the Orleans
and now with the Senior Women‟s Triple Crown
Shootout. Our aim is to give back to those ladies who
supported us through the years.” said Kaufman
This is Romeo‟s second senior title in 2012, having
won the Inaugural Senior US Women‟s Open in Reno,
Nev., in June. “I am very excited about winning the
Triple Crown shootout” said Romeo. “I first heard
about the event in March at the Golden Ladies and
thought to myself how cool it would be to win. But then
I heard the announcement from BPAA that the regular
division of the Women‟s US Open would award
$40,000.00 for first place and I knew I had a tough
decision to make; Bowl the Senior US Open and have
a shot at the TCS or bowl the regular division for a
shot at 40 grand? Looks like I made the right decision
since I won both inaugural events.”
I want to thank The Orleans and the entire Boyd
Gaming group, especially Mike Kaufman, for their
continued support of women‟s bowling. It was great of
Mike to fly in and present the check and trophy. I also
want to thank USBC, BPAA, ITRC, and Golden Ladies
for being a part of the TCS.”
During the Sr. Queens Dinner on Saturday, October
20,
Mike Kaufman announced Boyd Gaming and the
Orleans Hotel Casino will sponsor the 2013 Senior
Women‟s Triple Crown Shootout, following the same
format.
