“OFF the SHEET
By Jim Gordin
For the fourth year in a row the winner emerged from the
“Loser’s” bracket as Mark Del Cerro, Jr. defeated Greg
Thompson, Jr. (winner of the winner’s bracket and our 2011
Champion) twice to claim the title and first place guaranteed
prize of $3,000.
Greg had defeated Mark in round 6 of the winner’s bracket
(568 to 471). So, Mark went on a terror in the loser’s bracket
averaging 266 in his three matches to emerge the champion
of the loser’s bracket. Now he could have another shot at
defeating Greg. He would have to do it twice as Greg had
zero losses and you have to be defeated twice to be elimi-
nated from the tournament.
This would be no small task as Greg was averaging 266.8
in his 5 matches, so far. Would Greg become our 1
st
multiple
title champion? Well, their first match was non eventful as
Mark defeated Greg easily 495-383. But the second match
was anything but non eventful. Greg came out guns a blaz-
ing and had a 41 pin lead after the first game 279 to 238.
Mark decided the time is now for a good game. Good
game? It was as he struck in the first and then went “OFF
the SHEET” forcing Greg to get the first strike in the tenth.
Greg’s delivery looked true but came up light leaving the 2-
10 split and Mark won the match 538 to 522 and emerged
as our 20
th
Annual
Brunswick
Modesto Masters champion.
Mark received a first place prize of $3,140.00.
Why did his bowling shirt read “OFF the SHEET”? Now we
know. This tournament is co-sponsored by Cal-West Roof-
ing, Bowling Outfitters, McHenry Bowl, Yosemite Lanes and
the Modesto USBC Association.
Our high qualifier this year was Bill Tholke from Oakley
with a seven game total of 1808 or a 258.2 average. This
year’s winner – Mark from Hayward qualified 19
th
with 1707
or a 243.8 average. Greg from San Jose qualified 15
th

1719 or a 245.5 average and received a total of $1,603 for
his 2
nd
place efforts. Tommy Nguyen from San Jose quali-
fied 13th with 1724 or a 246.2 average and finished 3
rd
for
$1,020. Rounding out the top four was our 2005 champion,
Dylan Kubochi from Sacramento qualifying 17th with 1710
or a 244.2 average and earning a respectable $870.
The last spot (24
th
) for match play was earned by Don
Mathey of Turlock with 1702 or a 243.1 average. It took a
seven game score of 1657 (34
th
place) or a 236.7 average
to receive the final check from the main prize fund. Local
bowlers grabbed 8 of the 34 checks. Side note – Don needs
to learn how to get around Anthony Thompson from Red-
ding as he was defeated twice by him 537-459 and 555-538.
In each match Anthony must have something against this
right hander as he rolled a 300.
Local bowlers competing in match play (other than Don)
were Raymond Coronado of Modesto, Rich Custer of Oak-
dale, Jason Edwards of Riverbank, Raymond Waring of
Modesto and Myles Duty of Modesto. R. Coronado 3

For the fifth year in a row a new incentive was in place for
the top local league bowler out of the cash from the main
prize fund. Alex Bermudez of Riverbank (46
th
with 1636)
received that award of $135. In addition, there was a $10
optional insurance pool for bowlers the age of 45 and over.
It paid out 5 spots this year. Bowlers receiving money from
the insurance pool were Sam Carter of Ben Lomond $80
with a score of 1653, Larry Dyson of Stockton $80 with a
score of 1653, Milo Coronado of Fresno $80 with a score of
1642, Steve Davis of Manteca $80 with a score of 1640 and
Steve R. Davis of Manteca $80 with a score of 1635. This
was the 10
th
year bowlers 45 and over could put up $10 in
addition to the standard entry fee for insurance. It pays 1
spot for every 8 entries for the “insurance” bowlers not earn-
ing a check in the main prize fund. There were a total of 40
eligible bowlers opting to pay the extra amount for
“insurance”.
This year there were a total of 137 entries coming from all
parts of Northern and Southern California, including Nevada
and Oregon. Total sponsorships from
Brunswick
and the
local businesses were $3,510. Based on the number of en-
tries and the total sponsorship money the main prize fund
paid out $16,388.
There were many high scores on Saturday and Sunday.
They included 15-300’s, 8-11 in a row and 3-800 series.

dina of Bakersfield, Travis Hewitt of Fremont, Jason Tehee
of Clovis, Robert Harmon of Jackson, Dylan Kubochi of Sac-
ramento, Jason Edwards, Raymond Waring, Myles Duty,

you to all bowlers who participated. Special thanks to Nick
Smith and Kevin Tabron from Brunswick and all of our local
sponsors. A special thanks to all of the helpers who worked
the tournament and the ball raffles. Next year’s tournament
