Women’s Championships Weekly Glance
(For April 11 - April 17, 2015)
Past USBC Queens champion leads four events at USBC Women's Champion-
ships A day after helping her team into the lead at the 2015 United States Bowl-
ing Congress Women's Championships, Diana Zavjalova of Beavercreek, Ohio,
maintained her momentum and finished her tournament debut as the leader in
four events.
The 23-year-old right-hander teamed with Team USA member Danielle McEwan
of Stony Point, New York, to set the number to beat in Diamond Doubles with a
1,356 total April 12 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada. McEwan, a
two-time USBC Team USA Trials champion, led the duo with 687, while Zavja-
lova added 669.
Zavjalova, the 2013 USBC Queens champion, continued strong in singles, re-
cording games of 228, 258 and 248 for a Diamond Singles-leading 734 series.
The effort also catapulted her into the lead in Diamond All-Events with 2,102.
McEwan moved into second place with 2,079 after sets of 760 in team and 632 in
singles.
At the NBS on April 11, the duo helped East Coast of Palm Harbor, Florida, to the
early lead in Diamond Team with 2,588. Zavjalova contributed a 699 series.
No bowler in tournament's 96-year history has won four titles in a single tourna-
ment. Six bowlers have captured three crowns during the same year, with the
most recent being Lindsay Boomershine of Brigham City, Utah, who won Scratch
Doubles and Scratch All-Events, and claimed a co-championship in Diamond
Doubles, at the NBS in 2012.
Michigan bowler celebrates 50 years at Women's Championships
Vivian Harasim of Portage, Michigan, a 92-year-old great-grandmother, made a
memorable march down Center Aisle at the National Bowling Stadium on April 12
to celebrate 50 years of participation at the USBC Women's Championships.
Harasim is the first of eight bowlers scheduled to reach the 50-year plateau in
Reno this year.
After receiving a plaque and pendant to commemorate the big day, Harasim hit
the lanes at the NBS for her team event, rolling games of 115, 87 and 109 for a
311 series.
"I just wish, when I look at all those girls out there, that they could enjoy some-
thing like that in their lifetimes," Harasim said.
Her journey at the Women's Championships began at the 1953 event in Detroit,
but it took her nearly a decade to return. Her second tournament appearance
came in 1961, and she has been to all but one event since 1969, missing the
2009 tournament in Reno because of a bout with pneumonia.
Harasim rolled a 313 series in doubles April 13 and teamed with Cheri
McCaffrey of Plainwell, Michigan, who added a 475 set for a 788 total, which is
22nd in Amethyst Doubles. Harasim added a 322 singles series for a 946.
