6 GAMER, SUNDAY - April 26th
―Davis – Another
New Champion,
Brunswick Modesto Masters
By Jim Gordon
For the third year in a row the winner emerged from
the ―Loser‘s‖ bracket as Steve Davis defeated Wayne
Garber (winner of the winner‘s bracket) twice to claim
the title and first place guaranteed prize of $3,000.
Steve took the longest road possible by losing his first
match sending him into the loser‘s bracket. Steve was
not discouraged at all. He would just need to win 7 con-
secutive matches to have a showdown with the winner
of the winner‘s bracket. No problem – Steve did just
that. He went on to win seven consecutive matches
averaging 251 in the process.
Now the big test –defeat Wayne twice for the title. No
small task here as Wayne was averaging 256 for his
first 5 matches. Well, Steve was up to the challenge
and squeaked by Wayne in their first match 511 to 494.
Now could he do it again or would Wayne take advan-
tage of the toll that the previous 18 games have taken
on Steve. Steve must have had a spare tank of gas
somewhere as he defeated Wayne 504 to 471 in their

For the fifth year in a row a new incentive was in
