Anita Murtishaw Leads Scratch
League Ladies With 723
MURRIETA - Every Thursday night at 9 PM
Cal Oaks Bowl hosts the premier scratch
league in the southern Citrus Belt. In my
mind this league is one of the Citrus Belt's
"MAJOR LEAGUES." The best of the best
southern bowlers compete including Jim Mur-
tishaw, Matt Murtishaw, Kevin Gagnon, Jeff
Lewen, Dewaine West, Jerry DeYager, Dar-
ron Peters, James Hawkins, Dave Gulley,
Allen Freeman, Ken Clay, Alan Mojado, Paul
Nilsen, Nick Reed, Scott Hatmaker, Scott
LaRiviere, Ron Zurn, Steve Jenkins, Kelly
Jones, Tony Bowman, Jim Barnes, and Scott
Filipi to name a few. "THIS LEAGUE FEA-
TURES A THICK HEAD OF CREAM AT THE
TOP OF THE GLASS."
While the guys regularly knock down a
great deal of pins, the gals do pretty well.
Recently the top three ladies in the league
rang up some pretty good scores. While the
league features some great younger ladies,
the top scorers are usually three senior la-
dies. I guess thirty to forty years of lane ex-
perience pays off.
Scott Pipher Smokes The
Lanes For 824
MURRIETA - Scott Pipher was on fire on a
recent Monday night rolling 824 (298 - 257 -
269) with the same ball he rolled a 829 last
season. That ball, the Storm Marvel Pearl, is
the best ball ever produced by Storm accord-
ing to Scott.
How can I argue with Scott based on the
"EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE" he submits?
Scores of 829, 824, 795, two 300s, several
290s and numerous 700s all bowled with the
Marvel! Case closed with no rebuttal from
me. What do you think?
Scott managed his 824 with twenty-nine
strikes, three spares and one open frame.
The amazing thing is Scott scored an 824
with an open in the tenth frame of game two!
An 824 is a big score if you stay clean, but is
a GIGANTIC SCORE when a bowler has a
tenth frame open.
So, WHAT IS THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF
STRIKES YOU NEED TO BOWL 800? By
my calculations you can score 800 with 25
strikes. One way to score 800 with just 25
strikes would be to roll eleven strikes in two
games for 299 twice, then start the third game
with a triple. By following the triple with nine
count spares you would finish with a 212 and
810 (299 - 299 - 212). Can you bowl 800 with
just 24 strikes?
Cal Oak's managers DAVE TENNEY and
VICKY INGERTSON want to congratulate
Scott .
Anita Murtishaw led the ladies with a 723
followed by NANCY ZAK with a 693 and Hall
of Famer PAULA VIDAD at 638.
Great bowling ladies. The BOWLING
NEWS salutes you and all of the other great
lady bowlers of the Citrus Belt.
Campagnale And Cochran Lead
Citrus Belt Bowlers At
PBA West Regional
CATHEDRAL CITY - Many of the Citrus
Belt's best bowlers congregated in the desert
about a week ago and battled for the PBA
Cathedral City Western Regional Title.
The tournament's qualifying results
showed that 21 of the 94 entrants were active
Citrus Belt bowlers. Several others were
former Citrus Belt members including even-
tual champion Dave Wodka and runner-up
Mike Haugen. Our guys had to compete
against several nationally known bowlers
including Eddie Van Daniken, Eric Forkel,
Michael Haugen, Jr., Missy Parken, Scott
Norton, Stu Williams and Dave Wodka.
After qualifying, Bobby Campagnale, the
Citrus Belt's top two hander, was in first place
with 2023 pins and a 252 average. Seven of
the top twelve qualifiers were current or for-
mer Citrus Belt bowlers including Campag-
nale, Cochran, DeVaney, Haugen, Alan Ma-
jado, Wodka, and Vince Wood.
In the end the tournament was won by
Dave Wodka with our best finishers being
Campagnale ($800), Sean Cochran ($800),
DeVaney ($625), Wood ($625), and Mojado
($625). Wodka earned $2,500 for first place.
Two of our guys, Marv Sargent and Paul
Nilsen, earned $250 senior checks. Some of
our other guys who did well included (in the
order of finish) Darron Peters, Joel Ricketts,
Ray Cobb, Kevin Hoffman, Justin Ziegler,
Zach Jellsey and Tony Rodriguez. All of
these men averaged above 200 for the week-
end.
Southern California's young phenom, 15
year old Wesley Low, Jr., competed and fin-
ished 36th with a 216 average on the Chame-
leon pattern. I've seen this ypung man bowl
in a JAT Tour-
ney and I'm
sure he will be
a PBA star in
a few years.
