California Bowlers Tour Reno Invitational Draws
Record 400 Bowlers
by: Bette Addington, California Bowling Writers
Reno, NV--Summertime means bowling tournaments with the majority of league bowlers
out on the road vacationing and one favorite spot to travel to is Reno, Nevada. Each
year, for the past seven years, in August, the annual California Bowlers Tour Reno Invita-
tional takes place at the National Bowling Stadium. This year with many bowlers anx-
iously awaiting to compete, the number of entrants escalated to 400 much to the surprise
of Gina Moura, CBT Owner & Tournament Director! This equaled out to sold-out squads
for over three days of competition.
The CBT was created by Gina Moura back in 2009 after bowlers from throughout CA
reached out and encouraged her to form such an organization so she could continue
doing what she loves and that is promoting the game of bowling through running tourna-
ments and obviously these bowlers are still, today, supporting her. CBT has numerous
tournaments throughout the year but the granddaddy of them all is the CBT Invitational in
Reno. And the first ever CBT event back in 2009 that started it all was the CBT Reno
Invitational. Moura figured back then that she would hold the Invitational and then a few
other local tournaments each year. Well, that has obviously changed as CBT now puts
on monthly Handicapped Doubles events which draw anywhere from 100-150 teams per
weekend plus monthly Handicap 6-Gamers, Scratch Doubles events, No-Tap events and
much more. The appeal of CBT is that is for bowlers of all ages and averages and Moura
encourages bowlers who might never have considered to bowl a tournament to come out
and join in on the fun and then they are hooked! There are no membership dues to be-
long to CBT.
It’s amazing but obviously all the hard work and dedication that Gina Moura puts into
CBT pays off. This year’s CBT Reno Invitational had 100 teams competing in the Team
event alone! This year’s first place winning team, Team Huynh from Elk Grove, CA,
Moura said, ―was made up on Saturday. Kim Huynh and Henry Ho of Elk Grove planned
to bowl but Kim was not able to bowl so I had to find three subs for Henry. Tony and
Phyllis Blakeley of Antioch were available and Bruce Cantrell of Citrus Heights wanted to
bowl another team squad so they hit the lanes together and the rest is history!‖ And,
wow, did Cantrell contribute as he rolled the only 800 series of the event (805) with
games of 270-259-276. They won $1,000 for their first place Team event win. Chris
Choate of Antioch rolled the only 300 game of this tournament.
Besides CBT, Moura keeps herself busy as the Executive Director/Tournament Director
of the California State Senior Open Championships which is a year-round job even
though the event takes place for five consecutive weekends in October and November
each year as well as she is also involved as the Tournament Director for the annual Don
Glover Masters in early October plus the Diablo Seniors (Paddock Bowl) and the Las
Vegas Funtime No Tap event (The Orleans in Vegas). Moura added, ―I can truly say I
am a FULL TIME tournament director!‖ She spends 40+ weekends a year running an
event somewhere! She is currently in the planning stages of starting a 50+ No Tap Dou-
bles event in the Spring/Summer, in Reno so stay tuned for more information on that.
Sound like fun? Want to join in on this action in 2016?? The 8
th
annual Reno Invita-
tional is scheduled for August 12-14, 2016, at the National Bowling Stadium (where this
event will be held through 2018), in Reno, NV. The CBT Reno Invitational has the Dou-
bles and Singles events on Friday night and Sunday morning and the Team squads take
place on Saturday.
