SERVING THE BOWLING INDUSTRY SINCE 1967
Wayne & Bonnie Garber Bowl 300 x 2
by Bette Addington, California Bowling Writers
Modesto, CA - Yosemite Lanes was on an emotional
high Tuesday night, September 15, when not one 300
game was shot but two. And both were shot for the same
game. It gets even better! They were bowled by husband
and wife - Wayne and Bonnie Garber. And if that‘s not
phenomenal enough, they were bowling on different
teams and both won their games with this contribution!
How much more exciting can it get?
Competing in their Tuesday league for just the second week of this Fall season in a
league they have bowled in for at least 20 years, Wayne said for that second game,
he ―was watching Bonnie since the 6
th
frame‖ when she was busy stringing her strikes
and added, ―she didn‘t know I was striking.‖ They were just four pairs away from each
other. The crowds gathered in anticipation behind their lanes. Bonnie got a loud
round of applause when she bowled her 11
th
. But the applause grew louder as
Wayne shot his 12
th
. Then, just 15 seconds later, as Bonnie prepared for her last ball,
she remarked, ―Really? Right now?? Ok!‖ and let ‗er rip to the loudest ovation of the
night! Everyone went crazy to witness this once-in-a-lifetime moment!
The Garber‘s have both been on the bowling scene for many years. Wayne has
been bowling since he was 4 years old (43 years) and Bonnie for 27 years. Both
have had numerous 300 career games - Wayne (over 100) and Bonnie (8). Wayne‘s
bowling resume shows he competes and runs scratch tournaments and has for years
as well as is a PBA member. Bonnie came from bowling years ago in the WTA
(Women‘s Tournament Assoc.) where she won a title and WWPB (Western Womens
Professional Bowlers).
Both are members of the Modesto
Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
On this special night in their lives,
Wayne (a Hammer Ball Rep.) was
throwing the Hammer Red Pearl
Widow ball and Bonnie had switched
to her Brunswick Red Solid ball to
accomplish this feat.
Editors Note: Unofficially I believe
the Garbers have set a national re-
cord also. First husband and wife
to shoot 300 not on the same
team or lanes.
I did some digging and it is very
confusing, we will just have to
wait and see how USBC figures
it all out.
Congrats to the Murtishaws on
doing it TWICE as husband and
wife. Way cool it all happens in
the sunny state of California!
What a week, Garbers on Sep-
tember 15th and the Murtishaws
on September 17th!
MURRIETA – In 2002 Jim and Anita Murtishaw tied a national record when they became
the second married couple to roll 300s in the same game while bowling on the same team.
That is, both Jim and Anita each rolled a 300 in the same game for the same team. A St.
Louis couple was the first to accomplish the fete.
Last Thursday the Murtishaw‘s did it again. Both Jim and Anita rolled perfectos as team-
mates in the first game of Cal Oaks 640 Scratch League. That‘s a new national record.
They established a new national record by becoming the first married couple to roll perfect
games in the same game as teammates, two times. Yes, both Jim and Anita each rolled a
300 in the same game as teammates, a second time. ONCE A TIE, TWICE A RECORD.
No surprise that the Murtishaw‘s set a national record. Both are members of the Citrus Belt
Hall of Fame. Both have led the Citrus Belt in high average. Both have rolled multiple per-
fect games and 800s. Anita still holds the Association record for the highest three game
series (848) by a woman.
No surprise that the Murtishaw‘s set a national record. Jim is a PBA National Champion
who competed on the national tour for nearly ten years. Jim competed in the PBA Tourna-
ment of Champions for several years and finished second one time to PETE WEBER,
missing a Major Title by just a few pins.
Jim regularly averages 230 plus in league play while Anita has averaged 200 or higher for
over twenty seasons. AMAZINGSTUFF.
NO SURPRISE that such accomplished bowlers have set a national record. The Mur-
tishaw family is probably
the NUMBER ONE bowl-
ing family in the Citrus Belt
and this record just solidi-
fies their position as such.
