– OCTOBER 2013
Q.
During my practice sessions I bowl well. Everything seems to go per-
fectly. Speed is good, I hit my target most times. I repeat shots and pick
up most spares with ease. When I bowl in league or in a tournament all of
this changes. It seems as though I have forgotten everything I ever knew
about the game. Nothing goes right. I have not been able to figure out
what is going on. Do you have any ideas?
A.
In practice there is no reward for the shots we make. So we stay loose
and staying loose and relaxed is the key to good performance. Sounds
like to me that when you get to league and to tournaments you are getting
tight. When your approach and swing gets tight we begin to try too hard.
We start helping the ball, we squeeze the ball, we steer or aim the ball.
Then our whole game comes apart. Nothing goes right. Then the harder
we try the worse it gets. Next time in league try visualizing your practice
sessions. Try to have more fun and not work at scoring. Work at just hit-
ting your target and be happy if you do, no matter the outcome. Have fun
with your teammates keep things light. Just relax and have a good time. If
you can put making big scores aside you can relax and the big scores will
come.
Q.
I am in the market for a new ball and would like some advice on what
to get. I have tried reading some reviews but it seems to me in reviews
that all the new balls are the best there ever was. I get confused. I know
you are a member of Roto Grips amateur staff so I am alright with hearing
about the new Roto Grip balls. I have been a fan of Storm and Roto Grip
for some time. Can you give me your take on the newest balls in your ar-
senal?
A.
I would be happy to review the new additions to the Roto Grip line. I
have to commend Roto Grip for all three of these new balls as I truly be-
lieve they have achieved something new at least for me with these new
balls. I fight slower speed in my game and the newer balls have all been
more powerful but this comes with a price for me. More hook. The Totally
Defiant is different. It is very powerful but is super clean through the
heads. Goes longer than the other high powered balls
but has plenty of hit in the back. The best part is it saves power without
showing the super snap at the pins. So for me it is very controllable. If the
lanes are too dry for the Totally Defiant then I can go to the Deranged. It
too is very smooth in the front and it too does not over snap in the back.
The best part is you can play it about 5 boards further out on the lane than
the Totally Defiant. The look I get of the ball going down the lane is nearly
the same as the Totally Defiant but with less overall hook. Both of the
Balls the Totally Defiant and the Deranged have a reactive pearl cover
stock. The Rumble is a solid cover stock and is matte finish but it also
goes a little longer than most solids I have. It hits very hard and compli-
ments the other two balls. I altered the box finish on my Rumble I just took
down the sanding marks a bit to help it go a little longer. I did this because
of my slower speed to get it through the front part of the lanes. Someone
with more speed may want to leave it box finish.
