2017 Tournament of The Americas And
Pabcon Youth Championships
By
ARLINGTON, Texas -
The summer of top-tier youth
bowling is underway with the start of the 2017 Junior
Gold Championships, and a handful of bowlers who
already are members of
i
n 2017
have been selected to represent the United States at
two upcoming events.
The 2017 Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas
will take place at Strikers Family Sportscenter in Sun-
rise, Florida, from July 23-29, while the 2017 Pan
American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) Youth
Championships will be held at Bol Obispado in Mon-
terrey, Mexico, from Sept. 2-9.
Representing Junior Team USA at the Tournament of
the Americas will be Briley Haugh of Faribault, Minne-
sota, Pete Vergos of Apopka, Florida, Haley Cum-
mings of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Adrianna Stacy of
Sebring, Florida, in the Junior A division (under 20),
and Anthony Neuer of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Rich-
ard Paul III of Winton, California, Mabel Cummins of
Elburn, Illinois, and Allie Leiendecker of Wooster,
Ohio, in the Junior B division (under 16).
The Tournament of the Americas features bowlers
from North America, Central America, South America
and the Caribbean and also includes adult, senior and
super senior divisions.
Participants compete in singles (12 games), doubles
(six games), mixed doubles (six games) and team
competition (eight games), with medals also being
awarded for all-events and national all-events (total of
all four team members over 32 games).
The United States won 31 of the 45 possible gold
medals at the 2016 Tournament of the Americas. A
total of 13 gold medals were collected in the Junior A
and B divisions.
The PABCON Youth Championships, which features
countries from the American Zone, will be split into two
categories - Under 21 and Under 16 - for singles, dou-
bles, mixed doubles, trios, team and Masters competi-
tion. Medals also will be awarded for all-events.
Junior Team USA only will participate in the U21
category, which it dominated in Panama in 2015.
The Junior Team USA boys claimed all six gold med-
als, three silver medals and four bronze medals in
2015, and the girls earned two golds on the way to an
eight-medal haul. Together, the group topped the
medal table with 21 total medals (eight gold, seven
silver and six bronze).
Representing Junior Team USA on the boys side at
the 2017 PABCON Youth Championships will be Bran-
don Biondo of Carpentersville, Illinois, Jeff Mann of
West Lafayette, Indiana, Kennon McFalls of Gastonia,
North Carolina, and Cortez Schenck of Phoenix.
The Junior Team USA girls headed to Mexico are
Julia Bond of Aurora, Illinois, Sydney Brummett of Fort
Wayne, Indiana, Breanna Clemmer of Clover, South
Carolina, and Stephanie Schwartz of Racine, Wiscon-
sin.
"We've got a couple of opportunities coming up to
really test ourselves against the countries in our zone
and continue to develop some young talent," Junior
Team USA head coach Bryan O'Keefe said. "The
World Bowling Youth Championships is right around
the corner (2018), and we want to be proven and
ready to excel at that event on our home soil in De-
troit."
Youth Ready To Roll!
2017 CUSBC Youth Championships
Country Club Bowl, San Rafael, CA
By Tina Martin, California Bowling Writers
“Youth ARE the future of our Sport! All ages and abili-
ties! A Lifetime of Memories!”
The youth bowlers and families rolled into San Rafael
this past weekend, ready to ROLL! This was the first of
two weekends of the event. It was 104 degrees outside
on Saturday and the Center air conditioner and fans were
running on high speed. Several came into Country Club
Bowl with 2 roller bags full of three balls each! The youth
were ready and their scores showed just that.
The unofficial results of the weekend are already posted
on
u
nder 2017 Youth Champion-
ships. Some high scores definitely worth mentioning are
In Doubles-A Division, Cloverleaf Bowlers Patrick Daba-
tos & Noah Tom rolled 1451. Patrick bowled 264/719 and
Noah 269/739. Windsor Bowl Maranda Pattison and
Madison Bailey are in second place with a 1429.
Maranda bowled 288/730 and Madison 257/699. Other
scores: Daniel Chin 279/705, Andrei Tacorda 278/705,
Aaron Tabaka 246/713. Several 50 pins over awards
were given out.
Zoe Rodriguez, 16, of Van Nuys was the highlight of the
opening squad. She played the National Anthem on her
Violin. A Junior at Van Nuys High School, she has played
the violin since 1
st
grade and this was her first time solo
performance for a big group. With a 160 average and
having bowled since age 4, Zoe was ready to bowl with
the Corbin Bowl group.
This youth tournament would not happen without the
volunteer dedication of the coaches, parents and bowling
centers. Special thanks go to the coaches that brought
their groups from Southern California to the event via bus
this year. The Jewel City group was headed by Marvyn
Galsim who organized 12 teams/48 bowlers from his
Center and to Rose Bianchard of Vista Entertainment
Center for organization of 7 teams/28 bowlers.
Vista Entertainment Center recently closed and program
is now at Base Lanes at Camp Pendle-
ton. These groups also came back to
bowl on Saturday evening to bowl the
Prince/Princess, Queens/Masters &
Coaches Tournaments.
Thanks to Lynn Matsubara and Tom
Leigh for running this Championship
event. Larry Peppers CUSCBC Assn.
Manager and Vern Coleman, CUSBC
Office Asst. had everything ready to
run smoothly. Tournament Photogra-
pher Chris Arvanitis captured the
memories for all bowlers and parents.
Our Country Club Bowl team was
again awesome. We thank our new
GM Tahnee Martin, Asst. Manager
Gray Williams and all our dedicated
bowlers that came to keep the scores.
This tournament brings back special
memories for me as a Junior Director
organizing our youth to their State
Championships back in the 80’s and
90’s. Now those bowlers are doing the
same thing with their kids and many
also received their 50 pins over award!
